Starship Troopers: A Not-So-Subtle Anti-War Film
Director Paul Verhoeven and Actor Casper Van Dien Unpack the Film's Deeper Message

Before a captivated audience at the 2023 Comic-Con International, director Paul Verhoeven and actor Casper Van Dien shared their insights into the making of their 1997 sci-fi war classic, Starship Troopers. Based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein, the film follows a group of humans in a fascist militaristic future who wage war with giant alien bugs known as Arachnids.
Despite its seemingly ordinary action-flick facade, Verhoeven skillfully crafted a subtle anti-war theme throughout the film. "I wanted to show the absurdity and futility of war," said Verhoeven. "The characters are brainwashed into believing that fighting is the only way to achieve glory and success, but in the end, it's all just a meaningless waste of life."
Van Dien, who played Johnny Rico, the film's protagonist, echoed Verhoeven's sentiment. "The film doesn't glorify war," he said. "It shows the horrors and devastation that it brings, and how it ultimately corrupts and destroys those who engage in it."
Verhoeven also discussed the film's unique visual style, which featured a blend of live-action and CGI. "We wanted to create a world that was both realistic and fantastical," he said. "The bugs were designed to be both terrifying and awe-inspiring, and I think we succeeded in creating a truly immersive and memorable experience for the audience."
Starship Troopers has become a cult classic over the years, and its anti-war message resonates even more strongly today than it did when it was first released. As Verhoeven put it, "War is always a tragedy, and it's important to remember that there are no heroes or villains, just victims."
